The family of James and Martha (Sharp) Barrowclough
came to the United States aboard the S. S. Malta of Glasgow “where W. H. P. Haines is Master, burthen 1449 tons, bound from
the Port of Liverpool in Queenstown (England) for Boston (MA)”.
According to the ship’s Report and List of Passengers,
obtained from the U. S. National Archives, the ship arrived in Boston, 6 July 1869. The family traveled “steerage” and their
names, ages and occupations were as follows:
James age 40 - Laborer Martha age 37 Samuel*
age 17 - Laborer Walter age 11 Hannah age 10 William age 8 Lydia age 7
George age 5 Eli age 4 Mary age 2 Martha age 1
James was, according to
Vol. 81, page 42, 1874 of the court records, naturalized on the 29th of September 1874 in the U.S. Circuit Court, Boston,
MA. By law, his minor children were also granted U.S. Citizenship at this time.
*Samuel was born a Sharp and the younger
brother of Martha. For some reason, yet unknown, he became the stepson of James.

resided in CA and had a daughter, Barbara who had 4 children: Sharon, Kenneth, Ronald, and Christopher. Sharon later had
2 children: Stephanie and Darrell. WILLIAM BARROWCLOUGH - No known record of a marriage or offspring. HANNAH BARROWCLOUGH-
Married a man named FISHER and had a daughter, Mary Ann (GODDARD) who had 2 children, William and a daughter, name not know.
Hannah later married a man named SNAPE and had 2 children, Hannah Denham (CROMPTON) who had a daughter named Ruth KENNEDY
and a son William who was later adopted by the CRITCHLEY family. LYDIA BARROWCLOUGH – Apparently married a man named DENHAM
and had no children, but did adopter her sister Hannah’s daughter Hannah. MARTHA ANN BARROWCLOUGH married a PETERSON and
had 2 sons. Frank and William. William had two daughters. One was named Cynthia and the other daughter’s name is not known. MARY
ANN BARROWCLOUGH married a MAKIN and had 2 children. A son James and a daughter whose name is not know.
James and
Martha lived at what is now 781 Eastern Avenue, Fall River, MA until their deaths. Records indicate that in the year 1896,
Eastern Avenue was either rezoned or extended and the house addresses were renumbered and 89 Eastern Avenue became 781 Eastern
Avenue. This house was own by Martha Barrowclough until her death. As of 1978 the house was still standing.
According
to the Fall River City Directories found in the main library of the Fall River Public Library, James worked as both a loom
fixer and a spinner. The same directories indicate that Martha took in boarders.
James and Martha are both buried
at Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River, MA.

date unknown. ELLA ROSTRUM (ROSTROM) Born 1865 Died December 13, 1932 Fall River, MA. CHILDREN: JAMES WALTER
BARROWCLOUGH SADIE BARROWCLOUGH DAUGHTER name unknown. Reported mentally ill and sent to State Hospital.
Walter,
according to the Fall River Directories previously mentioned, worked as a weaver at the Wampanaog Mill and the Stafford Mill
and as a wood and cool salesman for the business of Barrowclough Brothers.
Barrowclough Brothers was a business operated
by brothers Eli and Walter Barrowclough. They apparently sold wood and cool from the location of the family home owned by
their mother, Martha at 89 Eastern Avenue, Fall River, MA from 1886 to 1887. Records indicate that Eli was the primary owner
as he continued to operate the business without Walter until 1891 when he, Eli, appears to have moved from Fall River possibly
to New Bedford, MA.
Walter and Ella are both buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River, MA at Buckeye Path 33274.

JAMES BARROWCLOUGH
James Walter Barrowclough was one of the founders of the Stone Bridge Water District, Tiverton,
RI. He was appointed as the first superintendent in 1948 and was serving as such when he died. In addition to his work with
the water board, He was one of the men who helped set up the Stone Bridge Fire Department in its present (1950) form. He
served as Secretary-Treasurer of the department for a number of years. He was a member of the Narragansett Lodge, AF and
AM and the Central Baptist Church of Tiverton (RI). James had been employed by the Newport (RI) Torpedo Station for 30 years.
He left as a Quarterman-Machinist. He attended Fall River (MA) schools. From the Fall River Herald Obituary.
